Magnetic nanoparticles for environmental applications and risk assessment: towards a “zero waste principle” paradigm (MANTRA)

  • Increasing amounts of chemical pollutants from wastewater treatment plants are discharged at sea. Adsorption of pollutants with magnetic adsorbents and their recovery by magnetic filtration may become one of the promising methods for the treatment of wastewater.
  • The main challenge of this transdisciplinary project is to investigate a new generation of water decontaminants based on composites in which magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) are incorporated.
  • This project aims at: elaborating the magnetic composites using iron nanoparticles and evaluating their adsorption efficiency for the depollution; developing a recyclable process using magnetic filtration; assessing the (nano) (eco)toxicity of the different magnetic composites and detecting biological effects of targeted model pollutants.
  • This innovative project fits with green chemistry concept as well as with the zero waste principle and represents a valuable approach to environmental risk assessment and pollution management.
