  • The goal of the project is to investigate the sources of variability affecting Marine Protected Areas’ (MPAs) performances in the Mediterranean Sea. We posit that a key uninvestigated source of variation may be linked to the management, the design and the organizational aspects of the MPAs.
  • In order to test our hypothesis, our work will involve three steps: 1) gathering the available data (via literature mining and administering questionnaires) on MPAs management, design and organization; 2) gathering eco-biological data (via literature mining and field work); 3) testing the putative correlation between organizational aspects and bio-ecological effectiveness of MPAs.
  • The results of this study have the potential to improve the available scientific knowledge about the factors affecting the performance of Mediterranean MPAs, allowing to improve management of existing MPAs and help creating new ones.
