  • Marine Protected Areas in Adriatic and Black Seas are managed individually, despite their potential connectivity. The project COCONET aims at identifying groups of putatively interconnected MPAs in the Mediterranean and the Black Seas, shifting from local (single MPA) to regional (Networks of MPAs) and basin (network of networks) scales.
  • The researchers of the ECOMERS laboratory are mostly involved in the connectivity and conservation of marine forests. The genetic connectivity of Cystoseira barbata is investigated in both pilot project sites (Adriatic and Black Seas) as much as the recovery potential of Cystoseira forests that have been lost due to the destructive fishing of date mussels (Lithophaga lithophaga) and the overgrazing of sea urchins.
  • The project will produce guidelines to design, manage and monitor networks of MPAs, and an enriched wind atlas for both the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
